Mass Story Lab/Life After Lock-Up - Sat., November 12
1 - 5 PM – Free Event
A participatory storytelling and design experience that promotes empathy, healing, reform, and justice by listening to the stories of people directly affected by the criminal justice system. Community Arts Practitioner Piper Anderson will facilitate the Mass Story Lab and Taja-Nia Henderson, a legal scholar at Rutgers who studies the history of incarceration, will frame the discussion. Talk by Heather Ann Thompson - Thurs., December 1
7 PM - Free Event
Award-winning historian Heather Ann Thompson will speak on "The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971: Why History Matters to Mass Incarceration Today." Thompson's book Blood in the Water is the first definitive history of the infamous Attica prison uprising and sheds new light on the roots of mass incarceration in the US. After the conversation with Dr. Thompson, community members in Greensboro will give information about how they are addressing these issues. The Legacy of Chain Gangs - Sat., December 10
1pm – Free Event
Youth-led organization GrowingChange will present on the chain gang era in rural North Carolina. They will also speak about their efforts to transform an abandoned prison in Scotland County into a sustainable farm.  http://www.growingchange.org/

We are offering two types of guided tours of the exhibit:

Tours led by individuals directly affected by incarceration:
Individuals who have been directly affected by mass incarceration will guide visitors on tours, sharing their unique perspectives and facilitating discussion about the issues highlighted throughout the exhibit.

Tours led by student curators:
UNCG Museum Studies Graduate students who curated a part of the exhibit will offer tours, giving insight on the research and development experience, and discussing how the history of incarceration fostered new perspectives.
