What is a SuDoc number?
Every SuDoc number begins with a capital letter or letters, which stand for the main issuing agency. For example:“A” stands for the Agriculture Dept and “HE” stands for the Dept. of Health and Human Services.
After the beginning letter, there is a number, a period, and another number. Don’t think of this as a decimal number – think of the number after the period as a whole new number. That’s because HE 20.57 would come before HE 20.3152. As whole numbers, 57 is less than 3152.
Every SuDoc number is split in two by a colon after the second number. The part of the SuDoc before the colon indicates what agency produced it. The part of the SuDoc after the colon indicates its unique number based on its date or its title. For instance, a serial that comes out every month might be labeled D 1.67:97/4 (meaning April of 1997). Or a publication that comes out annually might look like ED 1.337:996.
Walter Clinton Jackson Library is a depository in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). The FDLP is administered by the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO), which was created by law in 1813 to communicate government information to the American public in a way that is freely and easily accessible. Jackson Library has been a selective depository in Congressional District 6 of the program since being designated in 1963. While microfilm may no longer be collected, as well as many other material changes since that time, the core mission and function of a federal depository library has not altered.
